Our Cats Are Smart!

We love all cats but have to admit that some are more talented than others.

Take Memphis, who was in our shelter about three years ago. As the above video shows, this cat has learned some clever tricks from her family. Can your animal do this or something else? Please let us know.

While we can't guarantee that every one of our adoptable animals can perform, you'll find that they make up for it in many other ways.

Rich Unleashed: My First Pet

Black cats are the coolest.

As we approach Halloween, I decided to spend some time with a few of my cooler cat friends today at Peggy Adams Animal Rescue League.  Milo here loves the wild myths that have surrounded her and her brothers and sisters for hundreds of years. Lilly just shakes her head incredulously. And Kera here… I swear she was thinking to herself, “Seriously? You people are nuts.”

My first cat – when I was about 5 years old – was a black cat named “Jenny.” 

What in the world were my parents thinking?!?! Had they not heard that black cats were in cahoots with witches and demons and regularly would take the shape of humans to spy on us and do other evil things? 

But then again, my parents come from English and Irish stock. Clearly they knew that in Great Britain and Ireland, black cats bring you good luck and not evil doings. And I think I can attest to the character of my parents. Neither is a witch or a demon. (If they are they sure have done a good job keeping a secret.)

In all seriousness though, my parents simply saw “Jenny” as a great cat who would be a great addition to the Anderson family.

And since “Jenny”, I’ve had white cats, grey cats and orange cats. I’ve loved them all, but to me black cats are the coolest. They’re a bit like having your own little black jaguar roaming around your house. Why else are they cool? Two words… Cat Woman.  Enough said. How can you NOT like black cats. 

But still, for whatever reason, animal shelters like ours at Peggy Adams Animal Rescue League are flooded with black cats and kittens. And for whatever reason, many people won’t even consider adopting a black cat. And so here I am, standing with my black cat friends, shaking my head and thinking “You people are nuts!”

Black cats rule! And two black cats are cooler than one. Seriously, adopt a pair and it will be one of the best decisions you’ll ever make.

Just ask Milo, Lilly or Kera. They’ll back me up on this.

Kennel Zen

 

You can now play a new role in helping prepare our dogs for adoption. It's something we call, Kennel Zen.

In our our kennel run, you'll notice some brightly colored buckets spaced throughout the room. These contain dog treats.

We encourage you to practice Kennel Zen by giving the animals some of the treats.

This is not just about letting them enjoy a tasty snack. Our goal is to make our canines more comfortable around strangers.

As you may know, when dogs in a kennel are nervous, they can exhibit stressful behavior like jumping, barking, or rushing to the front of their cages.

The more relaxed our dogs are with new faces, the more they'll start to learn and demonstrate good adoptable behavior.

This Deserves a "Wow!"

Every day our Clinic Staff does a tremendous job of caring for our animals.  As part of the nature of their work, it's mostly unseen by the public.

Today join us as we shine the spotlight on this professional and caring group of people.

On Tuesday, they gave 47 animals vaccinations. On the same day, they performed 53 spay/neuter surgeries. This is an amazing amount of very important work for just one day.

Despite the busy time, every animal received the care and attention he or she needed.

Please join us in saluting this dedicated group as they help improve the lives of so many, one animal at a time.

A Happy Reunion

John, Jodie, Denali, and Ike

Ike and Denali came to our shelter as a pair. Eventually, the Siberian Huskies found new homes. Unfortunately, they couldn’t be adopted together.

 

Still, John, who adopted Ike, wanted to stay in touch with the family that adopted Denali. Recently he was contacted by them with an opportunity.

Denali’s owners had fallen on challenging times and wondered if John would be willing to adopt the dog from them. 

John and his wife, Jodie, decided they couldn’t pass up this opportunity. A dog meetup was soon scheduled. Would Ike and Denali remember one another?

Within seconds, John and Jodie knew the made the right choice. 

Lorie said, “There was not a dry eye in the house,” at the explosion of joy they witnessed when they the two 7 year olds once again had the chance to play with one another.
