The Art of Adoption

adopt a dog, peggy adams animal rescue league, Melissa
The story of a dog with no home inspired an artist and now the artist is using her talents to inspire others to adopt this longtime resident of Peggy Adams Animal Rescue League.

Melissa, a spayed female, black and white American Pit Bull Terrier, has been in our shelter for two years. She's an animal who's lived through some tough times and is expected to bloom in a loving home.

Painter, Levity Tomkinson, heard of the challenges we've faced in finding Melissa a new home and decided to pick up her paint brushes.

She's created a special portrait of Melissa that will be given to the person who adopts this loving animal.

Through her blog, you can see how this portrait took shape. For Tomkinson, picking the right colors to reflect the dog's character was a challenge:

adopt a dog, peggy adams animal rescue league, MelissaWhen I first heard about how sweet she was, I was thinking of a pink or something a little bit more feminine, but as Lizz (Peggy Adams Animal  Rescue League Volunteer Coordinator, Lizz Portmess) described more of her personality to me, I began to think "soft" and "feminine" didn't encompass Melissa's whole being. The strongest part of her personality seems to be her sweet demeanor, but she is also happy and knows how to keep her cool when people visit. Lizz also described her as a "strong-willed girl," and I then wanted a color that not only reflected her sweetness, but her strength, too. And then the perfect color for Melissa popped out at me from my bag of paints! A mix between green and blue, described as "Bluegrass," with just enough feminine class in its dark turquoise glory, some spunk to spice it up, but not too much boldness so I could bring in how cool and calm Melissa can be, and you've got the perfect background color for this incredible girl!

It's our hope that Tomkinson's creation will move Melissa one step closer to a loving home. A Foster Parent of Melissa's says, "All I can say about my dear sweet girl is that she demands nothing but love.  She wants to cuddle and do the right thing. "

The lucky adopter will not only receive the painting but the adoption fee will be waived. Her new owner will also receive FREE Science Diet food for 1 year, FREE heartworm preventative for 1 year and FREE vaccines from the Peggy Adams Animal Rescue League Clinic for the life of Melissa! In return, she will shower you with kisses, love and appreciation. Help us find Melissa a new home.

  3. I couldn't think of a better artist to paint such a sweet and charismatic dog. Levity not only gives her all in her work but in doing research to find the soul behind the animal. Melissa may not have had the best luck in the past, but hopefully this painting will get her the exposure she deserves. Thank you to both Levity (www.etsy.com/shop/LevityAndRin)and the staff at Peggy Adams for working tirelessly to care for and find Melissa is home!
